Hi there !
The finish on guitars fascinates me - I just love the finish on my National Duolians. One made in 1934 (on the left) and the other in 1935 (right)

How about close-ups of your guitars ?

Hi there !
Not sure if chrome boy could get such a perfect mirror finish as mine.
It is nickel plated brass. It is also engraved around the (near) edges of the front, back and sides.
For a tricone copy- I'd suggest a "Vintage" or "Johnson"
(they are made by the same company in China/Korea or wherever, just different label)
For a single cone - I don't suggest a copy.
Single cones come in two type - National type (biscuit bridge) and Dobro type (spider bridge)
National for authentic Blues
Dobro for authentic C&W/Bluegrass (yuk !)
You'd be far better off buying a 2nd hand (used) good one.
Of course for Nationals, there are vintage ones and remakes by the company "National Resophonic" which are not really the same company as the originals BUT the nearest. Any ones even better than that are mainly luthier made one off's.
A used / 2nd hand "National Resophonic" resonator is the best option (in my opinion).
(still a lot of money but every penny well spent - a cheap copy is every penny wasted).
I'd suggest the "Delphi" powder-coated steel body one.
Its a cannon and will last 100 years of harsh treatment easily.

Where Stew ???
That finish is wicked on the resonator. Pity about the reflected image eh?

Doug love the variax but it looks naked without pickups or is that just me. I would have designed it with some fake humbuckers on.

Hate to say it but I agree. I'm sure the Variax is great but, It somehow just does't look finished. Love the PRS though!

Farley !! What can I say ......... it's a bit ........ errr ........ BLUE, only joking mate. That is a fine looking guitar ........ PRS are definitely at the top of the tree when it comes to making beautiful looking guitars. The quality of the timbers and the finish are superb.

Gotta say, I'd rather have the Chromeboy! The Dobro's look great but I don't think they are really for me. Perhaps I'd better try one first though!

Notice a bit of a trend starting?? LOL
I think you are right Zombo the finish is amazing on the National and from memory trying the the one Snakey had when were students it was rather heavy. I could play it for toffee I had puny finger that could push those chunky strings down. Was always in awe of Rich's ability to play those things esp. his slide playing which is unbelievable.

Got to agree with you the PRS finish is breathtaking you can only get that high gloss by putting enough paint on then polishing the hell out of it to get that finish !!!

Hi again !
That's very kind Stewbert. You should see me now attacking the guitars - even my Baritone.
The new ones are heavier than the vintage ones (as the guage of steel or brass is thicker now).
Crikey, they are not that heavy !! Ya big jessie !!
Not any heavier than a Les Paul, perhaps lighter in fact.
Another thing ! THEY ARE NOT DOBROS !
Aaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrrrrrrgggggggggggghhhhhhhhhh hhhhhhhh !!!!!!!!
Don't make me angry !!!! They are Nationals.
Completely differnet type of resonator cone inside - gives a very different sound. At least as different as a Strat single coil is to a Les Paul humbucker, if not more. Dobros give that nasal C&W tone (yuk !!)
Nationals give that blues Blind Boy Fuller / Son House tone (ballsy, gritty sound)
Seroiusly though, you need to try Nationals - they are VERY cool.
Loud as F*** without an amp. Who needs an amp ? They're for wimps !!

There are some guitars that you look at and just think to yourself "my God thats BEAUTIFUL wish I had one of those, they just have that fantastic finish, classy paint jobs and all that. Then occasionally there is one that comes along and just turns your stomach, "like a bad curry", cheers zombo. Nice work :thumb:
