I decided to do a fabric top on a Jackson Dinky body I recently picked up on E bay. I was gloss blass until I took the sander to it.
Fabric top just applied and one coat of Sanding Sealer.

After a couple more coats of Sealer with light sanding in between. Cavities cut out with X-acto.

After several more coats and my first attempt at a "poor boy" burst with black to give the fabric a antiqued rice paper kind of look.

Tomorrow starts the 25 to 30 coats of clear I plan on doing. Not all in the same day of course.

Looks nice. What do you have planned for the rest of the guitar? (neck, hardwear etc...)
excellent what did you use to glue the fabric,

Thanks guys! I used Titebond II wood glue to put it down. I used a brush to get good coverage. I'm looking for a Jackson neck right now. Preferably with a reverse neck and shark tooth inlays. I want to cover and burst the headstock the same as the body. Black Original Floyd Rose and probably EMG's neck and bridge. I have the first light coats of clear on. I'll get a few more done today and tomorrow.

Man, you guys have got some balls. I wouldn't have a clue where to start.
Could you give me more information as to what you have done so far ?
As I gather, you've taken a guitar body, and sanded all the original paint and coats off until you're down to bare wood ?
Then glued on this fabric.
Apply coat of sanding sealer (does this soak through the fabric and thus seal the wood ?)
Add a couple of coats of sealer with light sanding (is this wet or dry sanding, and what is dry sanding, what is wet sanding ?)
More coats of sealer (is this to make absolutely sure that the wood is sealed ?)
Then apply the black to give the burst effect
Then the clear coats.
Sorry to be a pain. I've always wanted to do something with a guitar body, but never really understood the terms and why you have to do all of these steps.
Cheers,

You bet I can tell were to go. Here are the two sites I have been reading religiously for the past two weeks and I bet you will too.
www.projectguitar.com ....everything you could ever want to know about finishing, refinishing, painting, polishing, rewiring and flat out building a guitar. They have a forum that is full of guys with tons of experience even some professional builders from well known shops. I got all of the directions for the fabric top and burst from the tutorial pages. You'll find them.
www.reranch.com ....just like the other one. Reranch also sells supplies to do your project. They also have a forum with some really great builders. And if you don't know how to do something, just ask, someone will get back to you.
After sanding, I applied the fabric with Titebond wood glue. After drying, it's 5- coats of Sanding sealer. The first coats is heavy and soaks into the fabricand to the wood. Light sanding after the third coats keeps thing even. There's a bit of triming on the excess fabric and the body cavities to be done when the sealer sets up. I used an X-acto knife a fresh blades. Now it's just a matter of lots of clear coat to build a nice thick top.
You can find a great tutorial with pictures and supply list at project guitar.com The authors name is Brian Calvert.
Good luck with your project.

I'm getting there. Had some problems last night with blushing :x (fogging of the finish). I tried to get in one last coat late last night and I think there was too much humidity. Anyway, I had to sand it down a lttle to remove the blush and reapply clear. I live in S.W. Florida so there's always too much humidity. Here are some pics with a little more clear applied. I guess I need more patience. :?

Well thanks. I actually have changed my mind on the neck. I think I'll do a Warmoth "Jackson" neck in Maple with an Ebony board, and one inlay of the Japanese character for Music at the 12th fret. Of course I'll cover the headstock in the same fabric.

a maple board would look cool :)

Tough call, either maple or ebony would look nice with that fabric.

I think the richness of ebony will go well with black burst and black in the characters.
Tom B
13-01-2005, 06:00 PM
yeah you're probably right that would give some contrast with the cream-ish colour of the fabric, too

yeah sometimes guitarfreaks are terribly funny. Like : "oh in that video that player seems to have some other pickup in his guitar. I just NEED to know wich one" :D I think every sane (=not-guitarplaying) person would think we're nuts :D
it's been a couple of days just wondered how it's getting on?
it must be ready for playing right!

I wish, I went pickup shopping today and probably will go with a Duncan Distortion in the bridge and Jazz model in the neck spot. I am still searching for the right neck too. As for the finish...it's finished and looks pretty good. Just letting it set a few more days before i go to the rubbing compound. I will be on maternity leave with my wife in a couple of weeks so I'll have plenty of time to work. Sorry no new updates.

I let the clear dry for a few extra days. I hit it the random orbital buffer and 3M Perfect It III rubbing compound. WOW, deeper more wet looking gloss that any of my other guitars. More to come soon.

Ok....update time. I have the back looking good got another coat or two of clear to go then sanding work. Neck came in today. A really clean example of a Jackson reverse. We'll be having a baby in a few days so I'll have my hands full for a while. As soon as things get a little normal i be wiring the pups. Pics coming soon.
no rush eh! it takes me months ask r\2e
