Reluctant as I am to start bandying cries of 'Girlie' again, and I won't, I feel I should just point out that real men like Jeff Beck, Mark Knoffler and me don't use picks so you should have a category for the non believers among us. In the interests of fair play and political correctness I also feel you should include a category for the bubble haired freaks who use pre decimal sixpences (doubtless to make sure their nail varnish does not get chipped).

I have found that the perfect picks for all out shredding are; Dulop Tortex 1mm (blue). Anything thinner just doesn't have the "bite" and anything thicker is just too thick imho.

But if you're talking about plastic picks, I use some jemsite 1.15 (pink) picks. They are a little small and don't have the same attack as Tortex, so 99% of the time I am using Dunlop Tortex 1mm (blue)

I use .88 JDs most of the time, sometimes .73 if I know I'm going to be playing lots a chords. I used to play fingers only but there are sounds you can only emulate with a pick and the alternate picking is needed for real spead.

I don't know how you guys play with 1.0mm +. Dosn't it limit your tone?

I have a video of Paul Gilbert playing with an electric drill - it was plugged in and he was using it switched on  don't know what brand but I'm sure you'll get the same result from any drill !! 8)

In all fairness though Ron it depends what your going to play for example Mark Knopfler uses his fingers and his sound is unique awesome player in his field!! But to say anyone is a girly for using one is a bit narrow minded can you imagine shredding with the fingers ?? There are different types of music and styles on the guitar!! Anyway I reckon you are a big skin flint and won't fork out for one!!

Ron, not Rick!! Damn - my Scottish upbringing caught out yet again................. It's not true that we Scots are mean, that's just a rumour we've spread so no one will try and get money out of us.

Of course, being serious for a moment, different styles need different techniques, my comments were aimed at those amongst you (and you know who you are) who use picks so they don't break their nails or damage their nail polish. I will use a pick if I have to, eg when nails are worn down or damaged and it's painful not to, but I just find fingers a lot more expressive. After all, a guitar is definitely female and your girlfriend/wife/partner would not be too impressed if you tickled her fancy with a plectrum, now would she?

Is a dicky mint better than a minty dick?

But I won't mention names. Electrical wires on my testimonials wouldn't drag it out of me (I think you're in the clear though Phlame!)

Farley, you're not paying attention! I use my fingers, very rarely a pick, in fact extremely rarely, but when I do, being a good scotsman, I use the free ones given away with Guitar mags on occasion, so colour is not an issue, nor is thickness.....................

been using Dunlop jazzIII's from 1988-2004 - i still use them when hired for studio sessions - a .73 for acoustic guitar jingle-jangle stuff - my main pick of choice since early this year r called bone picks, sold at a local store , cost like $5 Sing dollars a piece - approx 2mm - works really well with strats - bit more warmer mids cutting thru in tone :)

crowbarr

0.5 for acoustic chord stuff

0.7-1.5 for everything else, mostly .73 yellow dunlop tortex

I'm a bit particular with my picks.
.50 and heavier for lead stuff - thick enough for a good attack but thin enough to mould into the shape of your thumb and finger over time, and thinner .46 for rhythm acoustic stuff.
Oh, and the good old thumb - index - middle finger for my days of Richard Thompson Kelly Joe Phelps madness.

Just got some Jazz III's in for a client - really tiny things? Did they use to be bigger? He was suprised by the size(ooh er missus!?) and said he thought he'd played with a bigger one before (STOP IT!).

Perhaps things are shrinking as I get older?!
