I bet no one will guess this because it was before the electric guitar was invented.

It's a term used to describe the desiganted area of a theatre, where the cheap seats are located, amd dates back to the 1600's

When I was a kid we had something like a mosh pit commonly refered to as the playground bodies were always flying around while we hummed the theme to Spiderman...maybe thats why I'm so screwed up..LOL

I like your answer Zeusse.
Zappafan I was not aware of that. I was refering to “The Rite of Spring”. The work's premiere on May 29, 1913, at the Théatre des Champs-Elysées in Paris. The audience never heard such music and were practicly rioting. Maybe someone knows of other mosh pits.
BTW I may be the only one who thinks so but Igor Stravinsky was the inventor of heavy metal.

You probabaly are, well apart from Stravinsky himself. He wrote some great music though.

Um - could it have been The Colosseum?
Steve Vai is an avid Stravinsky fan!

You are right actually. But the pit was the entertainment then. That was probably the first written account aside from human sacrifice to pits. Humans have been killing each other for entertainment long before the colosseum. I was speaking of moshing at a music show.
