you are my new hero; a total shredmaster without a doubt.. but as with all shred it loses all sense of taste in places (layla for example )

There is so much to cover when it comes to practice, there are so many guitar videos out there showing licks, techniques but fail to include exactly how to practice them. I am currently in the middle of making an instructional video of licks that will include practice suggestions (proper fingering etc..) along with each example. With my current schedule, the completion of this project seems far away.
Here is something I wrote on the subject of practice a lil while back:
....whether it is alternate picking, legato, economey/sweep, whatever, the key is to practice them slow and accurate, speed comes with time, basically through accurate repetition, the brain begins to grasp what you are essentially trying to nail, and the less thought you need to put into something, the faster it can be executed. Remember that speed without accuracy is nothing, and you can't gain accurate clean speed by practicing fast.. Basically there are two parts to learning a lick or exercise.. first part is memorizing the motif, lick (probablly best without a metronome ) and the second part is the repetition of this idea accurately slowly, evenly consistantly, perfectly (with a metronome). You can play just about anything perfectly if you play it slow enough. Speeding it up is just a matter of repetition. The use of a metronome is very helpful.. the idea is not so that you can keep time... it's to force your fingers to play slow or at a certain tempo, evenly...and also is a very convenient method to monitor your progress. An example of how you could use a metronome is...say you start at 90 bmp, accurate repetitions ( 20-100 times) 4 notes a beat depending...on progress etc.. then move up the metronome up 2 bmp and then move back down one then keep that pattern throughout; 2 bpm forward, one back etc.. this is just an idea.. there are countless ways to use a metronome for practice. The idea is to keep it gradual.
Make sure you use correct fingering for every excersise, if you have to play 18, 20, 21st fret, your pinky is the lucky finger to hit the 21st fret, not your third finger. If you think your fingers are too fat for this "feat" watch Itzach pearlman play the violin. You want it to be accurate, every note sounding out perfect and in time and definitely with the proper technique and fingering --- keep that in mind with everything.
Pay attention to your areas that need most work. If you find that say inside picking' or pivot points in sweeping, etc..are a bitch, then create your own licks designed to pound out those areas until your hands are numb. Prioritize them.
Remember that your brain also learns mistakes, so the more inaccurate repetitions you do, the longer it will take to master the 'lick'. If you can't nail it perfect SLOW DOWN.
Guitar can be pretty demanding on your hands.
Stretch and massage your arms hands and fingers before, durring and after practicing.

I second that too your fingers need time to find there way around the brain gets it straight away but those fingers are slower to begin with !! :woot:

Cool thanks Ashilan, do you still practice much..? I've been trying to get at least 3 hours a day during the week and non-stop on the weekends, it seems to be paying off too. By the way thanks for the practice advice you posted earlier, it really helped me get some licks sounding better and my speed seems to be improving regularly now.
Hey cool web-page too man..
Cheers
