All I want to say on the whole matter is arguing about who is wrong and right is as far as I'm concerned a complete waste of time!
We all have personal viewpoints and that's ok but to call each other gay or girlie or even unmanly is rather childish strings are a personal thing like using picks or playing with the fingers!
I use 9,s ok I love them and I don't give a toss what others think that doesn't make me a Big Jessy either I have provided evidence on this site that I can play well with 9's unlike others!! All I can say is if you think 10's or 11's are better then lets hear you play on the site and put your mouth into action. I think all of this can go too far so lets drop this nonsense now and stop the insults!!
8, 15, 40, 60, 95, 110

Keep it comin lads thought you'd like that Farley they are really manly measurements with some kick to them as well ! So 9's it is then who else is for 9's ?? Mine are 9-46 by the way!
Shakespeare had the rights of it - "Methinks the lady doth protest too much"
I think all of this can go too far so lets drop this nonsense now and stop the insults!!
Insults o Flying One? Good natured leg pulling, nothing more, meant to get people posting, and succeeding I might add. Stirring people into action is the name of the game and you can only do that by being controversial. Personally, if you hadn't already guessed, I couldn't give a toss which strings people use, I've used a wide variety during my almost 40 years of playing, but it's fun stirring people up.

I'd need to be a Karate expert to play strings like that FZ. 10's are my poison currently. Maybe when I'm old and decrepit (in a couple of years) I'll have to switch to 9's to protect my poor old fingers. But in the meantime, Rock on!!!!
Tomo, that's the most basic truth in the Universe, wives don't suck. Don't know why, daren't ask, that's just the way it is.
I can almost forgive 9's on a Strat scale length, for the weak fingered (note the euphemism. Bet you can't play one of those) but on a Gibbo, no way! Please don't tell me you use 9's on a Gibbo scale length??

Tony Iommi has an unusual mix of gauges on his SG = 9,9,12,22,28,38s tuned down to C#. wonder how those 9s sit in that tune, high action settings possibly. my prefs are :-
9 - 42s for Standard E n Eb tuning [hendrix]
10-46s for low D n C# tunings
11-52s for low C n B tunings [12s r cool in B too]

Tony Iommi has a good excuse for light strings and alternate tunings, he has two of his finger cutoff at the first knuckle on his fretting hand. Necessity is the mother of invention.

Are you sure Phalme?? I saw an interview with him once about it and he said it was his last day as a sheet metal worker and he chopped the tips off his fingers!!
He wouldn't give up and melted plastic from washing up bottles rubbed them down and made finger tips out of them !
Anyway if anyone has any more information on it let us know??
Oh no what have I started now !!!

Not sure about the melted washing up bottles! but, from iommi.com, I copied the following:
"... But Iommi's musical career was nearly derailed prematurely when he suffered a horrible accident at a sheet metal factory, when a machine sliced off the tips of the fingers on his right hand. Depressed and figuring that his guitar playing days were behind him, a friend turned him onto guitarist Django Reinhardt (who lost use of two fingers in a gypsy caravan campfire accident), inspiring Iommi to give the six-string another go, with soft plastic tips attached to the ends of his fingers..."

That is the reason the Iommi is condidered "The Grandfather of Metal" because he was pretty much the first person to tune down his guitar and bang out evil sounding power Chords and riffs.
I heard Ozzy in an interview once; saying that he really respected Iommi's playing when he considered the fact that Iommi could even feel where he was exacly on the fretboard.
