At the risk of being controversial and not wanting to start any fierce arguments (or riots!).... Who, in your opinion, is the most overated, egotistical guitarist (or band) on the planet.
Just to kick it off... the obviously very talented Steve Vai does my head in! what a poncy way to play the guitar and dissapear up your own jacksie with over indulgent clap trap and... he has some of the worst facials in the business!
Malmsteen is a close second for me....
And... I know they are better that I could ever dream of, they just p*ss me off!

Okay that Viking git Malmsteen what a horrible specimen not only does he look like someone who won the porky pig competition but he is so full of himself and he is thick as a barn door! Oh yes the pasty faced reptile can play but I saw him on a G3 DVD and the ponce was full of doing his karate kicks and swinging his vile scallop guitar round his fat neck! I can't stand his egotistical self centered way so get a life you nasty poo faced vomit bag !!

Malmsteen gets my vote to, he is an egotistical show off, just wish i could play half as good

hmmm i can't stand the stuff he does.
my views are quite documented i think.
i have an ibanez video of andy timmons, paul gilbert and steve vai playing somewhere in japan.
vai's stuff hmmm it sucks, he an emmence player just maybe we are judging him wrongly and he's ahead of his time!
but i don't think so.
btw steve if you ever read this, well i aint sorry dude i just don't like your stuff and thats my view!

Don't like over widdly stuff a la Vai - but impressive for 5 minutes! Thought Vai was good on Dave Lee Roth albums tho'!

saw roth last year, rock n roll panto at its best.. he's ace. Vai's best period. Guitarists are supposed to be in bands ;-)

I don't know what you guys are talking about, Steve Vai is proabably the best guitar player playing today. I actually don't think that Vai is egotistical or overrated at all, anybody that gets an honorary degree from Berkely must be pretty good (not only technically but theoretically ad well). He can play the most awkward fingerings at any speed, in any key, at anytime and then just when you think he's done he'll sweep the crap out of them. Ever tried to play some of Vai's stuff? It's no walk in the park.
And for the record I make wierd faces when I play too. It has to do with how much emotion you are conveying when you are completely lost in the music. Anybody that doesn't make a wierd face once in a while, while playing, is probably doing it all wrong.
Now as for my pick for the most overrated and full of themself player on the planet, it would definetely have to be the guitarist from Hoobastank. He is an absolute hack with a rack full of free PRS's and a backline of Boogies. I have no idea how such a crappy band and a singer with a speech impediment could ever become famous. But I guess that just proves that MTV ruins it for everybody, even themselves.
Enough of my ranting.

Just for the record this is not about playability Vai is an absolute genious as far as I am concerned neither does he come across as arrogant I met the guy he is cool but he does dress a bit poncy and I am jealous of those extremely long fingers of his!
But this is about what gets on our nerves it would be boring if everyone went round with a smile on their face wouldn't it so let out your frustration here on the guitarists that get on your nerves!
Here is another one great player but he is an old fish face especially by the solos Robin Trower !!!
yeh but phlame, steve vai maybe is the best player around but his stuff still sucks imho he plays purely because he can and yes a guitarist should be in a band (BandT).
I have really tried with him but it just bores me!
Somebody mentioned earlier about his DLR days now that stuff was better!.

Maybe so but as a kid my mum tried to make me go inside Ethel Austins so I vomited on the floor and we didn't go in !
Sometimes Mum tried to get me to put on puffy stuff but I refused so what's with Vai hasn't he got his own mind ?? If someone told me to put knickers on my head would I do it because it was stylish or some twit in Paris says it's fashionable John says no way baby!!!!!!!!!!! Hasn't Vai got the guts too say listen you sicko I am not going to dress like the circus is in town I don't like pantomine stuff ???????????

I guess Vai does have a choice in what he wears so he must be happy with his appearance. You've got to remeber that he is an artist and is a little out there.
I once asked on the Vai.com board if anyone liked the new BMRC, when I said that I didn't like it and I thought it was overpriced I got a quick reply that stated "You don't have to like everything the artist does, you know".

You should have known that bringing up a subject like this was bound to get people to forget that these guys are awesome guitarists. It doesn't matter to me that one may be fat and the other may dress funny. I wish I had as much guitar playing ability as one of their fingers.
For the record, I've never really liked Vai much except when he was in the movie Crossroads. That's when I first started learning guitar and the duel scene at the end blew my mind.
I like Malmsteen and have several cds. I usually can't listen to an entire cd at a time though. It starts sounding like a mess after awhile.
Hoobastank is pretty cool. I wish I knew more about the to know if anything said above is fact or just gealousy.
My opinion (and I'm sure this will stir up a hornets nest)..the most overrated bands are: Rush and Rolling Stones both come to mind.
In my mind overrated means that they are considered to be the best ever but I don't really like a single song by either of them.

Yep good on yeh mate don't quite agree with Rush talented band I would say but the Stones suck Jagger looks like a dried out date face ugly git and Richards well say no more !

No hornets nest, but you obviously weren't around when the Stones began. I recently obtained CDs of their first two albums, the first time they'd been released on CD and I'm blown away by the musicianship and the quality of the recordings for what was the dark ages. Give them a listen sometimes. Brian Jones on Little Red Rooster, Keef on Route 66, stunning stuff.
Yes they've probably gone on too long, but so have I. How do you give up? The roar of the greasepaint, the smell of the crowd............

Ugliness aside...I never liked ANY of there music. just my opinion of course...maybe I'll have to give their first 2 releases a listen. We did play Monkey Man (I think that's what it's called) at a gig the other night. Not being familiar with it I just followed the other guys. It's our lead singers fave RS songs. Still can't say that I like it! But then I wouldn't even know if we were playing it right!
It must have been okay since after the show the guy that requested it asked us to play at his bar!

Trouble with Ing-way (I spell as it sounds : )..
I've got quite a lot of video of Ing-way, he's damn good, Hendrix's trade marks were playing behind his head and with his teath, Ing-way's is playing with his head stuck up his own jacksie!

Reading the top posts about Vai I remembered something about him... He is a show off and wants to be a show off and he wears silly colors because he wants to wear silly colors. It is something he always wanted to be as a boy, when he watched his favourite glam rockers and all the other bands.

Hi Ron the software is real old like me its called iphoto plus 4 it's so simple to use like me only took me 10 minutes to do !
