Hi,
Had a Tokai LS75Q last week and it is fantastic ...My friend has a Gibson Les Paul Standard and it is as good if not better. This one has Gibson Classic '57+ at the bridge and an Aeroinstrument Level 3 at the neck and as soon as you plug it in you'll hear the quality. The other pickups are the standard Gotoh PAF 2 which are supposedly good in their own right but the first owner wouldn't have changed them for no reason. http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd279/Johnny-English/DSCF2197.jpg

I like Tokais a lot, having owned a couple of LP's and some Strats. Better than epiphone but they still don't really take you into Gibson territory unless you go Japanese, then the price difference isn't that great anyway on the high end models. Beware some of the models are fotoflamed/quilted and some models are plywood  of course YMMV and its all IMHO etc.... my last Tokai LP was on ebay about 5 minutes after Mr Gibson arrived. I love the 80's strats they made! Would rather take one over a Fender of the same period any day....

The Japanese Tokai LS models are mahogany with maple capping. This one is a 2001 and weighs 9.2 lbs and nearly £1000 cheaper than the standard LP.....I go on the sound and the feel of the guitar not the name. I also have a G&L S500 and that is like a Stratt on steroids..Swamp ash body and birds eye maple neck and the build quality can not be matched by Fender unless you go up in to the custom range ...then you are paying silly money ......its all down to the sound and feel..and if it makes you feel happy then thats what playing guitar is all about.
cheers

as I said, the japanese range are great - unfortunately the cost to import to NZ is not much different to a Gibson LP.
I don't go by weight anymore - it means nothing. A mate of mine here has a Custom Shop 58 LP model that is the lightest LP I"ve ever played, probably half the weight of mine. The sustain isn't as good and he's had to fight it with several PUP changes to make it sound halfway decent - before I would have argued that light is best, long tenon is best etc. but it's not always the case.
I go by sound and feel too - hence I own 3 strats and none of them are made by Fender USA - I have a MIM Squier that is the equal of most US Fenders I've played and I recently sold a MIM Fender that blew the socks off all Fender US models I tested when I was buying it. But didn't cut the mustard against a custom built strat I bought at half the price of a new Fender US Strat....
I've just spent 4 hours playing my LP at a gig and remembered why she normally stays at home and doesn't get out much - my shoulder needs the kind of deep massage only provided by chinese massage parlours, and not the kind that provide 'extras'!

Hi bluesgeek,
agree with every thing you say......after playing my G&L for so long I'm up to about 40 min on the Tokai and am starting to walk with slight tilt to the right.
cheers

yeah it reminds me why I stopped playing bass ;) I guess I could get one of those BB King straps with the sheepskin on it, but then I'd have to admit to being an old man
