i'm attempting to create a new forum style.
if you go to the bottom left you can change to it.

i would really value your input here, as to colours, etc etc.
now what you have to remember is that i have never made a style before so some changes may take time.

also any issues regarding graphic placement etc i do know about but haven't fixed at the time of this post.

as you see it now its just black with standard graphics.

the shoutbox looks a bit odd rick - if it was still white it would probably work better

Rick

Rick

ok its default for all now.
somethings are still not correct, ie jamroom doesn't work yet.

so i've left it that you can change back if you hate it...
bottom left of site...

the latest topic bit on the right, I always look there for which thread has a new post in and you now cant really tell if one has or not, the blue text is to similar, I know thats just nit picking though.

Rick

hows that, its red now if it has a new post

Rick

the shoutbox looks a bit odd rick - if it was still white it would probably work better

pretty impossible really though, it inherits its settings from the rest of the style sheet and isn't very editable at all

i spotted a couple of icons missing somewhere but i've lost them now, if you find them point it out for me please.

other than that is seems to be working properly now and just needs some tweaks here and there, but other than that it's cool.

its now the default look and cannot be changed.

Rick

ok its virutally done now.
can't find any issues with it and it's here to stay.
its been the old style for over 2 years and was looking very old as well as being the same as other forums.

if enough of you want the old style back then i may consider adding the swap option back but i won't be supporting the old style anymore only this one and any others i design (now i've figured out how)

I have a couple of issues.

1 is that the purple user names are very difficult to read on the black background.

2. I hate the new theme to be honest. Sorry Rick

Rick
06-04-2008, 03:22 PM
ok, purple usernames are gone..

but be more specific please about 2
you have to remember you'll be used to it in a crack..

I just have an issue with Black sites. I just dont think they work. They make things very difficult to read as the colours of objects do not stand out as much as they do against a white background. This is one reason we dont use black paper and white / coloured pens.

I kinda dont like the way that the indent on various posts change it makes things look untidy and unstructured and thus messy.

I also dont like the use of lots of different fonts, ie the EDIT THREAD, QUOTE REPLY buttons. Too many fonts also make it look messy IMO

So where is the option for me to have the old one back ?

Rick
06-04-2008, 03:31 PM
the indents will dissapear when i get the graphics sorted totally.

the 5 small graphics are the wrong size causing some issues, but will be fixed in time.

as to black it looks ok to me, but i'll probably be making a couple of others now i have the knowledge. blue will stay unsupported though

ZappaFan
06-04-2008, 03:36 PM
So how do I change back to the old theme? Unsupported or not I am going to have serious eye probs if I carry on using this !! :-)

Dont get me wrong Rick, as always I appreciate you putting in the effort to liven up the site. But I am still of the 'if it aint broke don't fix it' school of thought.

Rick
06-04-2008, 03:44 PM
ok option to swap back is there for now..

you have to say though it's different to the clone rangers now, i mean all the rest of my ideas end up there!

so lets see how this goes..

I'm not moaning, but I do see Neal's point Rick.
I've changed back onto default & it is easier on the eye if you know what i mean.
Please don't take this the wrong way, but maybe some sort of compromise is needed m8 :-D

Rick

this is like why i've been asking all day for feedback, not just like "i don't like it"
people have views that they don't like something without any real justification, i can change any part of it but simply i don't like it isn't helpful.

if you watch top gear clarkson says i don't like this car because this, this, this, that and this sucks.

thats what i need to know.
i've changed the purple name, the blue will be changing to another colour soon, i can lighten the black background you name it

The yellow does help Rick

ZappaFan
06-04-2008, 04:14 PM
okay then mate I will try and do it more in the style of Clarkson. :-)

I dont like the new theme because I find it very difficult to read, irerespective of the other font colours. It kinda reminds me of G101 too which another site I hate the style of. Oh and the last bit is White on Black sucks.

I think a site, especially a forum, above all must be easy to read after all that is the main thing a forum does. Allows the exchange of words to take place. So when I am running at 1280 x 1024 and I cant read the darn thing there isnt much point.

Just my opinion of course. I will of course go with the flow but we were asked. I could of course just go out and buy some new glasses and a 32" monitor. :-)

Rick
06-04-2008, 04:18 PM
the g101 thing is a concern of mine to i have to say even more so with the gold..

i've now added a pensioner size 14pt font

Well, I just read the whole thread. Got to say that I have no issue reading white on black. I think, if I remeber rightly, that is how I learnt at School!! LOL But... that was a long time ago and now the use "white boards" Ha ha!

As for "if it aint broke don't fix it" line of thought well...., it wasn't broke but, looking back, it was tired though. As for multi fonts, I guess I would go along with you to a certain degree but it doesn't bother me that much.

If however there are enough guys who the whole "white on black" thing bothers then perhaps a lighter colour is the answer but for me, I'll stick with my first comment. I think it looks cool!

I think the banner doesnt suit now and some of the ones designed a while ago might go better

I think the black is a bit too black, but I suppose the green brigade will like it as anyone still using a CRT monitor will be drawing just that little bit less power! I've defaulted back to the old one for now though.

vbpager doesn't work in this style.
As i'm going to remove it when the next vbulletin come out i'm not going to fix it.

I like the white on black theme, I think it's less tiring on the eyes than looking at a mostly white screen which (IMO) is a little bit like looking at a dim light-bulb for hours at a time... can't be good for your retinas, surely?

I hate the yellow text, it makes me go all bog-eyed, it's almost difficult to focus on (IMO).

I don't think the font used for EDIT, QUOTE etc. works very well, it gives the impression of too many themes going on, I do like the grey though.

So, for the most part I like it, just a couple of minor issues that don't gel with me personally.

Sorry for not giving my input sooner but I've been having computer problems... in fact I'm still having computer problems but hey, it's nothing a credit card won't put right!

Good on you for investing so much of your valuable time to give 6SH a makeover Rick. You're a star!

i just noticed that when i fixed the black style last week, i forget to turn on the style changer (bottom left)
thats done now so if you want to use the standard one you can.

thanks robert its a pleasure, i even went the extra mile and it now has the same features as the blue one, just a couple of missing graphics which i'll mend one day when i land on it..
