Hey folks,
Here's the thing: my dad is going to Orlando over the summer and i've asked him to get me an Ibanez when he's over there as it's gonna cost me less money. I was wondering if he would need to pay any import duty or anything on it when he brings it back. I know if ordering from a US company, the buyer needs to pay import tax when UPS or whoever brings it in, but if he doesn't let slip that he bought it, do you think he'd get away with just declaring it as luggage?

tell him to just bring it back as hand luggage.
give it to the flight attendant they stow it away.
then casually bring it back through customs.

tell him to bang a couple of stickers on the case if it looks really new.

Risky business, the Customs are apparently well up to this dodge and know the prices of new, and vintage, guitars. It can be an unpleasant business being worked over by customs when they think you're trying to take the piss (don't ask!). Me, I'd pay the duty and VAT, at least you're saving the shipping costs.

shipping is pretty cheap $80 from the us.

i personally know a couple of guys who have brought guitars back without issues, and people regularly fly with them without customs hassles, you can just walk through customs.

Yeah, I didn't think he'd get busted really. My best friend went travelling to Australia with his guitar and didn't get pestered by customs, but my da is a bit wary in case he gets hit with an import tax or something.
I'll talk him round.

Hey be careful because I don't know how it is in England but in Germany it is around 20% but Mr Bush and the EU have differences and there is an extra tax which gets bigger every month because of there differences I had to pay around 40% extra!
If I was you I would check with the custom office and get some advice !!

I am now the proud owner of a grey nickel RG1570.
I got it for $600 all in with a hard case which is around £340 in real money.
And the old boy didn't get pestered by customs.
Only thing is, they monkeys gave me the wrong trem arm for the edge-pro so I can't get no flutter, and the arm falls out when I get violent.
Apart from that, i'm well chuffed. It's a fooking amazing guitar.
After a small tweak of the set-up, she plays like a dream.
