Hi there! Just a quick question. If you buy a new computer that has Vista OS on it can you install XP OS instead, how would ya do this? Would this mess up the computer? I just like XP better.

when you buy it ask for downgrade to windows XP you get the Vista license but XP is installed, most vendors do it, because Vista is hated :-)

I think that most vendors have now changed their policy regarding downgrade options. Dell and HP, for example, now only offer new PC's with Vista installed. I think it may be the only option left is to buy an XP OS Seperately and install it from the CD.

Thanks guys! So,..if a downgrade it's possible,..I can just install XP over Vista OS without any issues? Just use the XP CD?

I would format the hard-drive first, then install XP.

Thanks guys! I figured I would have to format it, then do a fresh install of XP. Some of these machines you can buy at Walmart and places like that, seem to be very good. I looked at one the other day and it was a dual core with 3 or 4 gigs of ram for like $300.00. Ya can't go wrong for that price, but with 5 kids I need the break,..LMAO.:|

That may be the case for business customers only. I went on the HP site and tried to buy one and have it with XP, no deal. Business customers are supported in a different way as they already have Domains and environment that have huge amounts of investment and time put into them. Not such for home users. I too could go through my Dell account manager and order business PC's with XP, but not as a home user.

It could work out slightly cheaper but the main advantage is that you get to choose what goes into it, that's what I did, I also utilised my existing case, DVD drive and hard-drive so that helped to keep the cost down.

Exactly what I did, gutted the computer apart from the DVD drive and the hard drive and bought everything else new. I think I paid about £450 for the parts from a wholesaler for a computer with specs worth around £800-£1000 in PC world.

Thanks everyone. I think that's what I'm going to do,..buy the parts and do it myself. I do have a P4 3.06 processor machine and the only thing it needs is a new mother board. BUT the only problem is that it only handles 2 gigs of ram. I wanna use this box for recording. BUT,..it is faster, than the box I'm using now,..(2.0 processor with only a gig of ram) and it runs Sonar just fine,..but after about 15 to 20 tracks I have to start freezing tracks so I don't get drop outs. It's always the money thing that holds me back,..kinda sucks!! LMAO...

I know Lenovo offers your choice of Vista or XP. If one's doing it I'd suspect they're all offering the same choices, in an effort to compete.
That being said, with 5 kids a PC isn't going to give you the break you need. Valium might...............
