Strangely transfixed watching good old Fred up there.

"You could work quite comfortably as though you were on the ground"

I don't bloody think so!!!

I saw him driving one of his steam-engines on the road in Leigh once... the bugger was holding me up for ages before I got the chance to overtake him.

Brilliant!! I just watched another where he was talking about people criticising him for having "a few pints" before he goes up the ladders. He said "if you want to try this bloody sober......" LOL Brilliant stuff all round! There are loads on youtube.

Fred was a star, a one of a kind. No way could I do that. No way at all. Our grain bins are about 40' high and I have to get out of the safety rail at the top and get on to the smooth sloping metal roof holding on with one hand to switch the isolators and that is high enough for me but 200?? 300 foot up? Kudos indeed!

I don't get it. What's the big deal? What is the point of building that platform?

well gp up until the last 20 years or so that was the only way really to maintain the structure , so if the brickwork needed re/pointing . at say twenty five up
thats where the the platform would be fitted ( dogged ) .
im not sure how many 7foot platforms could be stacked at once ?
fredy would probably try 10 ! but generally there would be allways 1 face of the tower prone to the weather . then when there is enough sections eroded it would be tendered out to some BARMPOT to risk his neck to take fix the work

although now a days with tube scaffold . its a very fast process indeed . starting from bottom to top ! that way having the whole area to fix in 1 go
probably the first time in the structures life , hope this clears things up mate 8-)
