I Dont know if this Thread can or should be here,:worthy: anyways:

Hello everyone, this is a topic that really disturbs me. Here's the deal

I use headphones a lot, I use them for mixing recording listeting music etc etc, also I used to play with my amp at high levels with the speaker really really close to my right ear, wich now I regret

Now when listening to music with monitor headphones , I hear the things that Must be in the center, more on the left!!! This freaks me out! That can only mean that my right ear is F""""ed up!? Is there anything I can do? I'm really desperate, I'm only 18!

I would go see an ENT to get it assessed. I was at a music convention many years ago and the rest of my band and I got hearing tests (mainly because the Dr. giving them was incredibly hot) - we all had some minor permanent hearing loss cusing tinnitus (ringing in the ears) - but could still hear normal levels. Our drummer had it worse for his ear closest to his snare drum. I would get it checked out.

there is a good chance that you have damaged your ear and it is not reversable, go see the doc and tell him you get ringing in your ear and he will send you for a hearing test, then you will know.

The only thing I can say is take the steps to protect your hearing. See the doc straight away. Your still young enough where it's may be possible to heal. Only because your still young though. It's not a guarantee but I hope for the best for you. If you want to be a musician, your ears are your life. Take care of them.

Best of luck.

Most hearing damage is not reversable so one you have it you are stuck with it. You should get an audiogram done and this will give you a graphical view of your hearing. I have lived with hearing loss and tinnitus for many years and it is something you just get used to, but take steps to prevent any further damage by using some musicians earplugs. I have a set that are custom fitted with interchangable filters depending on how much attenuation you want. They are not cheap, mine were about £200 but well worth it as you don't lose any fidelity, just volume. You can get cheaper universal types as well at around £25 but need to be replaced every 6 months or so.

As for using headphones, you may need to switch to using near fields for mixing etc if you have significant loss in one ear as you brain will be able to compensate better for the imbalance. There is some useful information here about the workings of the ear and how the brain deals with sound.

Interesting link Stempy. key thing i took out was "only" wear earplugs when subjected to damaging stimuli otherwise your hearing can become more sensitive to tinnitus.

As suggested Alex go see your doc and get checked out. Chances are your brain will compensate for any minor loss of hearing you have encountered but be careful to protect your hearing from here on in especially if you go to gigs etc.

I have hearing loss in one ear only, prob due to sitting with an amplifier on the one side , I now take earplugs to gigs with me and stick them in. I do get a bit of abuse from friends for being an old fart but I dont care, I would rather not make things worse.

I have a constant ringing in both ears. Only bothers me when the room is quiet. I tend to make some kind of noise if things get too quiet because the ringing drives me nuts.

Just a suggestion, try taking off the headphones. There's these things called speakers that will do just as well without turning your eardrums to mush. Another suggestion, keep the Db level below 60.
Sorry, didn't mean to sound condescending.........

Funny you say that - I have the same problem. Doesn't effect me too much - hardly notice it, but when I am in bed getting ready to sleep it just rings. Annoying - but the question is would I give up those experiences that caused it? I would say no - but I am more conscious of it now and use more protection now. Makes me feel old. LOL

Thanks for the replies everyone!

well, i did an audio test, and it went perfect,my hearing is perfect according to it :S!!

So they told me to go to a psychiatric or something like that...that i must have mental illness that causes that hearing loss feeling, weird uh?

I have the same thing for as long as I can remember. Whenever I get a hearing test, I tell them to start at a descent volume so I can tell the difference between their noises compared to my own. LOL!

double post sorry:th_36_1_47:Well thats good Pollin....I'm wearing earplugs at band rehearsals now and will be using them live shortly.....but I got real personal with my Qtips in the last few years....yes even a little bit of wax build up can cause your issue

I just had a hearing test 2 weeks ago and they said my hearing is fine. But, like now, sitting here at the computer with nothing going on around me, I can hear that ringing. I'm with EvilKitty though, I wouldn't trade my experiences to get rid of this ringing.

i thought i had damaged my right hearing signifcantly once, for a few months i had a slight noticable difference in both ears, which over time got worse and worse.

turns out i had an infected eardrum, and it became so engorged with blood that it just didnt move any more.

i think i do have mild damage in my right ear because of the way i play acoustic guitar. i always rehearse with earplugs, although i dont always use them when im playing live, which is bad.
