You know, I always hated the look of the Variax. No pups just looked bloody awful (sorry Rick) but to me they were like an unfinished project. Sounded great but looked shocking! LOL Well... James Tyler have put that right...

Have you watched the demo? amazing piece of kit, very expensive tho. So much more options than any amp imo for recording and live. For someone like you or me stew both own 100 watt tube amps, be honest how often do you switch it on or record with it?

It's a great bit of kit that's for sure, but there's still something missing with it for me. I'll stick with proper amps for the time being.

And seeing how it appears you don't use it very much, how much do you want for the JVM? :D

Yes i did watch it Rob and agree for bedroom players like us it is the future. I just can't see out and out live musicians opting "on mass" for modelling over tube amps no matter how good they ahve got or are going to get. In proper studios I can see bands still opting for 20watt tube amps mostly but I guess modelling has been creeping in there.

I think I will start another thread, as I don't want to hijack Farls thread, would like to here peoples opinions on what they think is missing etc.. without starting a modelling versus tube war. I'm actually really interested :-) And Lyle make me a sensible cash offer!

How cool would it be if windows decided to be windows, mid gig..
A large bout of disk thrashing and for 30 seconds you sound like norman collier on guitar..

No way on gods earth could you use that stuff live, how could you trust it, jeez its bad enough with a dodgy lead.

cheers farl :-)

sorry to use the same guy demoing this piece of kit but he is about the best on utube

feedback and sustain demo, so question to Lyle is what do you find missing? And Stew I think it is out of reach for bedroom players due to price, this kit is aimed at live players and studios I would say.

It's lacking a bit of that valve amp warmth to me. If anything, it sounds too good - too clear, too precise. There's something a bit digital sounding about it - funnily enough  - I can't quite put my finger on it.

For recording, I reckon something like this is perfect. It's far more convenient than micing an amp, you don't need massive volume, and you can get great results out of it.
Live, however, is a different story. It's something I've noticed playing at weddings - where we don't use any backline amplification, just my Vox Tonelab into the PA. At low volumes, this stuff is great. Crank it up, and that's where things start to fall apart. I start to hear weird things in the high end - harshness that just isn't there with a real amp. It's just not the same for live work. One day, I reckon it'll get there, but it's a while away yet.

Standard is $1500, Ultra is $2000.

Whatever that is in pounds....

agreed Lyle, but are you talking about modelling kit in general here? The axe fx is claiming to adress all of the above. It is supposed to be better cranked. I guess you have to play one live! Some big name artists are using it saying it has replaced all of their racks. We shall see.

Aye, modelling in general. The same applies to the AxeFX for me though. Well, at least the bit about there being something missing for me. Don't get me wrong, the clips I've heard sound absolutely stunning, but I've had better sounds (for me) out of a good valve amp cranked up loud. Horses for courses and all that....

EDIT : Bloody hell, how many times have I said ''for me'' in this post....

In a word Rob the traditionalists find Tone missing from modelled sound.

I've had pretty good results from an XT for ages now...and I can get sustain in various places on various guitars. But I'm looking for something new at the end of the year and I think I just may go with amplitude or whatever for the house. I like the look of the Eleven rack but can't afford it.

Yea but you can't listen to those demos and tell me they guy isn't getting good tone, watch his fat tone demo on his youtube page.

As lyle said horses for courses but one needs to try the product out before saying something is missing, youtube doesn't have the greatest sound quality

I've got a Line6 James Tyler JTV-59 on order. Looks like they will start shipping towards the end of November. I'll let you know how it plays and sounds...I'm HIGHLY expectant.

There was a video linked on another thread about the new Pod HDs. The guy playing on the video said that the new Variax is a great guitar and he highly recomends it.

I don't think we'll be leaving those heavy amps at home until 128bit processing is the norm. They are what they are.
