Hi,

My guitarist might be needing a new amp soon - he's using a borrowed Fender 1x12" 65w combo at the moment.

He uses a Boss GT-6 for his sounds, so what combo amp, or type of combo amp should he be looking at?

We play rock/hard rock covers - Limp Bizkit/Green Day/Deep Purple/Pearl Jam/QOTSA. We have our own 4300w PA rig (JBL speakers with Yamaha & JBL power amps).

We thought he might DI from the GT-6, using the combo sort of as a stage guitar monitor. We have DI'd him without using a guitar amp, and it sounded great, but he really should have an amp for rehearsal & on stage (shouldn't he?).

We thought the most apropriate type of amp would be a 50w - 100w combo with either one or two 12"s. Given that he'll be using the GT-6, is there any point in going for one with loads of effects bells & whistles (Line 6 Spider, H&K Warp, Marshall MG100DFX, etc)?

Any comments/advice?

Thanks,

Mark

Phaedrus I would get him to try before he buys with Boss gt6 in presence!!
I had a gt6 that sounded great with headphones and via PC but had aweful problems with it via a substantial amp...the sound was too trebly.. he could of course plug directly into the PA system you guys have and do away with need for amp altogether.

I ended up selling the GT6 and got a POD XT LIVe which gives a great sound no matter what it is plugged into.... it can definitely be put into PA without amp!

I'm a bit biased - but Carlsbro Combo's offer amazing value and sounds! The GLX 50 or 100 would be ideal. Clean, distorion and a completely insane "crunch" channel. (read the review by a guitar tutor from Guernsey http://www.guitarzone.co.uk/catalog/product_reviews.php?cPath=23&products_id=28&osCsid=8ab1c408f1d16e38873afadf4d0d1231 : Lots of his pupils followed suit - I think half of Guernsey has a GLX 100. The other half just knit!)

Alternatively - the Fatboy valve amp is an amazing piece of kit. Really warm and punchy - Class A valve sound. Yummy!

the trick to combining a modeller with a real amp is to bypass the natural preamp of the amplifier and route the output of the modeller into the fx-return of the amp. thus using the "colouring" of the modeller and the power of the amp.

If ya don't have an FX loop set it absolutely clean. By all means take the GT6with him and try it with the amps. I run my GNX to the PA with a little delay while playing with my amp too
